CHS (2) Southern (1) Overtime victory!

A light rain began to fall as game time approached. The evening turned out to be very cool and damp. The game started with a bang as a flurry of activity from both teams, both teams defense and goal keepers were tested. Chesapeake started the scoring on the evening with an excellent set play that even had the camera man slow to react (Sorry Mel). The quick restart by Jaclyn Ward sent a beautiful chipped ball into the box.......Melanie Waters capitalized on the well placed ball with a header into the back of the net to beat the Southern keeper. Later in the first half a corner kick played in by Southern resulted in an own goal by Chesapeake. The 1 -1 dead lock remained in tact for the balance of the first half and thru the entire second half of play. Both keepers were tested in the second half of play, but held strong.
The end of regulation play...................... on to the the overtime play. Overtime rules are a maximum of two 10 minute golden goal periods of play.
A quick break by the teams and the game was back on, scoring opportunities came for both teams in the first period of play. The ten minute period of play ended with the game still tied.
One last quick break by the teams and the second overtime period begins. A quick early strike by the Cougars in the first minute of play almost ended the game but the Seahawk defense stood up to that challenge. As time was winding down in the second overtime period the crowd @ CHS grew as the men's game was set to be played at the conclusion of the ladies game. With less then two minutes to play in the match Chesapeake was awarded a corner kick, the kick was sent in by Nikkie Forrester. Melanie Waters managed to get a head on the ball however the Seahawk defense was able to clear the ball away from danger. There clear resulted in another corner kick for the Cougars. Again Nikki Forrester sent the cross into the box, this time Melanie Waters and a Southern defender managed to get a foot on the ball. As Southern expected the ball to be cleared again over the end line Melanie Waters exploded to the ball and managed to head the ball toward the face of the goal. Chesapeake had players staked out across the face of the goal in hopes of a rebound. Tori Luc managed to be in the right place and was able to out leap the Southern defender to head the ball into the back of the net. When then heard the now famous voice of the Women's Soccer team play announcer Jamie Lledo.....Gooooooooaaaaaaaaaaaall!!!!!
The contest ends with the ladies earning the victory.
